Congratulations on the approval of your courses!

To be honest, there were a lot of moments we were worried but after our meeting last week with OCISS, we gave them a hard deadline of January 24 to have our courses approved and THANKFULLY everyone was able to meet it.  HOORAY.

Approval was our first hurdle, please make sure you review what has been submitted into PDE3 as your course details and make all the necessary changes to your course portfolio requirements.  All courses are on PDE3 and the HSTA PD website and we will be doing everything we can to promote them to our members.

If you have any additional questions, please let us know.

Have a great weekend.

Teri Ann,

Your resubmitted course TL183079 Global Education: Tools and Approaches for Teacher Leaders (R) Online, has been reviewed and approved.

Your course will be released on PDE3.

As a gentle reminder,  I will need to go back in after the release to remove the additional section that was added by your sponsor due to a technical glitch that would not allow the original section to be seen.

I'd like to suggest a couple more fixes to help with specificity and/or consistency:

Your course title: I will move the word online.

So your course title would look like this:  TL183079 Global Education: Tools and Approaches for Teacher Leaders Online- (R)

Additional recommended changes:

In the Elements of Quality PD:

Focus on the School's Strategic Plan: "Participants will align their course content to their school's Strategic Plan and/or Academic and Financial Plan." - Might you consider updating to more accurate language? Change to "...their school's academic plan" and delete the rest.

Systemic Perspective: "This course is aligned to all of the HIDOE's system initiatives - the Department's Strategic Plan and 6 Priority Strategies, as well as schools' Academic and Financial Plan." - Rather than, "...the Department's Strategic Plan and 6 Priority Strategies...schools' Academic and Financial Plan." change to HIDOE Strategic Plan and the State Initiatives, as well as the schools' academic plan.

Rather than list all of the LRP requirements, might you consider this statement? This is the statement used in the two 21st Century courses that were already approved.
Each participant will submit a learning portfolio that is reflective of the course content learned and implemented. Please refer to course syllabus for Learning Results Portfolio requirements.

For the Sponsor Assurances: Might you consider using these bullets as they address all parts of the element? Again, this language was used in the two 21st Century courses that were already approved.

  • The course activities and assignments are aligned with the course objectives listed on the PD application.

  • Instructor(s) will deliver the course content as specified in the application.

  • Instructor(s) ensures quality portfolios and will review all portfolios and request revisions as necessary

  • Application documents reference post-event activities to be completed within a reasonable time frame.

If you plan to offer this course again, you will need to update the information. Please be aware that any specific information regarding dates, times, locations should only be stated in the Section template. Currently, there are dates in the Syllabus.

Also, might I recommend more specifics in the LRP as it is not clear what exactly is being implemented as part of the Action Plan? Is it a trial meeting or an actual meeting? As a gentle reminder, there must be some type of implementation of the new learning/skills/strategies.

I will share this information with your new sponsor once it has been determined who that will be.

Please let me know if you are okay with the additional changes

Thank you very much,
Kristin

Global Education Portfolio PDE Feedback

Aloha Rachel,
Your portfolio was selected for review and received the following feedback. Please have the revise/update returned by next Wednesday, Jan 17, 2018. Type all revisions/updates in a different color or highlighted for easier identification. The revisions should address the two bullets under specific feedback

Specific Feedback:
  • School Community Research - It would make the action plan more actionable if it were based on data, the statements provided do not appear to be data based. Please include data that is part of the Comprehensive Needs Assessment (CNA) and readily available (LDS, SQS, SBA, school level screener, etc). This data would also provide measurable outcomes to be addressed in the action plan.
    • It would also be beneficial to add how you came to the conclusion, based on the school/community data, that those specific ideas/topics should be presented.
      • The participant states: "I will be using Google Classroom as a tool to enhance student literacy, teacher to student communication, and teacher communication. The purpose of my presentation is to inform my colleagues about Google Classroom and also suggest it as a way for teachers to communicate on campus." - Please provide a connection between the literacy data and the use of Google Classroom to make an impact on the student literacy? What was the purpose of looking at the school profile and data?
  • You did a lot of reading of articles, etc.and watching videos in the beginning of the course. How was the new learning from the course content applied in the "action" part of the course?
If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thank you,

Teri Ann Lin

Aloha Terri
The submitted portfolio for TL180999 | Global Education: Tools and Approaches for Teacher Leaders | 287261 | HSTA Fall 2017 –
Global Education: Tools and Approaches for Teacher Leaders (Online) | Sep 30, 2017 - Dec 21, 2017, has been reviewed.

The portfolio is being denied at this time.  Please have the participant
revise/update by January 31, 2018.  Have all revisions/updates made in a different color or highlighted for easier identification.
The revisions should address the last two bullets under specific feedback. The captions do not need to be revised as I will make an exception for that.
If the participant is unable to complete the revision by January 31, 2018, please email me and I can extend the date.

Please see feedback below.

General Feedback to instructor:
  • I'm wondering if participants receive feedback and coaching from the instructor prior to the LRP due date so that the participants can make adjustments prior to submission?
  • In the course write-up (Elements of Quality PD) it states: "Participants will facilitate the collection, analysis, and use of classroom- and school-based data to identify opportunities to share strategies and resources to improve curriculum, instruction, assessment, school organization, and school culture." - If we want the participants to have others collect, analyze, and use data then we should have them do the same in the course to ensure that they can facilitate it effectively with others.
  • This is your course description yet there is minimal evidence that the content focused on facilitating improvements in instructional and student learning.  Or did "participants work collaboratively with fellow colleagues to constantly improve instructional practices."
    • "Global Education: Tools and Approaches for Teacher Leaders" is an online course offered by the Hawaii State Teachers Association in partnership with the NEA Foundation. In this HSTA Teacher Leadership course focused on Domain 4 (Facilitating Improvements in Instruction and Student Learning) and Domain 7 (Advocating for Student Learning and the Profession), participants will work collaboratively with fellow colleagues to constantly improve instructional practices and advocate for the teaching profession and for policies that benefit student learning"
Specific Feedback:
  • Captions - It appears that the captions in the LRP only address 2 of the 3 guiding questions for captions. Since the missing question is "What is this document?", I will accept it this time. Please be sure all three questions are addressed in future portfolios.

  • School Community Research - It would make the action plan more actionable if it were based on data, the statements provided do not appear to be data based. The participant could include data that is part of the Comprehensive Needs Assessment (CNA) and readily available (LDS, SQS, SBA, school level screener, etc). This data would also provide measurable outcomes to be addressed in the action plan.
    • It would also be beneficial to ask the participant how they came to the conclusion, based on the school/community data, that those specific ideas/topics should be presented.
  • The participants did a lot of reading of articles, etc.and watching videos in the beginning of the course. How was the new learning from the course content applied in the "action" part of the course?
If you plan to offer this course again, some updates/revisions to the course write-up and LRP requirements will be recommended.

The participant will receive credit once revisions are made and approved. Please review the revised portfolio before sending to me.

As for the other participants, I can request another portfolio if you think the others will be approved or we can wait until the revisions are made to the first portfolio. But, that means all participants will wait to receive credit.

Please let me know.

Thank  you,
Kristin

Happy New Year!

For those of you who are interested in taking PD (Professional Development) classes to help you move up on the pay scale, here are two classes that Joe LoVerde is offering starting in February.  Joe hasn't decided yet but mentioned in his email below that this may be the last two courses that he offers here in Hawaii due to changes being made within the OCISS regarding PD classes.

If interested, register through the PDE3 site and make sure you print out and have Brenda sign off of the form.

Subject: PD CLASSES

      Aloha Sheilynn,

We want to let you know that the responsibility for professional development in the DOE is now with the Office of Curriculum, Instruction and Student Support. There are some changes that the OCISS is making regarding the PD classes being offered. The one that impacts us the most, is that starting March 1, 2018 they are putting a cap on the number of teachers who can enroll in a class. That number is 30.

While we believe, that we can provide quality professional development courses with large number teachers, that is not the belief of  the OCISS. Their goal is to provide effective classes to all teachers in the state and feel that 30 participants or less is required for maximum benefit to each teacher. We respect their belief, even if we don't agree with it.

This change WILL NOT impact the two spring classes we have starting in February. There is NO cap on the number of teaches who can take either of those classes, so if you are interested in earning credits before the change takes effect, you may want to enroll in one or both of those classes. Information about those two classes is below.

Also, if you have credit for a class that you didn't complete, you will HAVE to use it this spring. At this time, we are determining whether or not we can continue to provide future classes, so we don't want any of you with available credit to lose that credit. We apologize for this change in policy, but it is necessary given the direction the OCISS is taking.

There is a saying, "The best way to predict the future, is to create it."  So in 2018, set goals, take action and make it one of your best years ever. Our goal has always been to present professional development classes that provide each participant with the knowledge and skills to be a more effective educator. That will never change and as we move forward in 2018, we are looking at all options to continue that work and fulfill our goal.

We are wishing each of you an incredible 2018!

        Aloha,
        Joe & Dave
